LIPSCOMB DESCRIBES THE FINDING OF A QUANTITY OF ANCIENT COINS, IN POOR CONDITION AND UNDATEABLE IN ASSARTING A WOOD ABOUT 800M FROM HAWRIDGE ON THE SE TOWARDS CHESHAM. SHORTLY AFTERWARD A POT WAS FOUND CONTAINING SILVER COINS OF EDWARD VI AND VALENTINIAN! COINS DISPOSED OF IN CHESHAM (BI1,BI2)
A few years prior to 1847 "a quantity of ancient coins" were found in a wood c 1/2 mile to the SE of Hawridge, towards Chesham. They were first found scattered but later an earthenware pot was found containing silver coins. All were said to be of Edward VI and of Valentinian the Roman emperor; which sounds improbable. The coins were mainly disposed of at Chesham by the labourers who found them. (1)
