An excavation, in 1863, made in the High Wycombe Cemetery, revealed a pit or circular chamber, seven feet deep, eight feet in diameter at the top and slightly tapering to a diameter of six feet at the bottom, these limits were well defined. Layers of different substances filled the chamber; a little less than three feet of the bottom consisted principally of charred wood, "evidently the remains of a cremation". Three feet above this was a mass of animal bones, unburnt Celtic pottery in fragments, and chalk rubbish. Besides these, there was a fragment of iron, and some roughly shaped flint implements. These relics were covered with a twelve inch thick layer of large squared flints, which came up to within a few inches of the surface. Other remains have since been discovered, of which no record has been preserved.
Probably an Iron Age corn-storage pit. (B1)
No further information (B8).
