Summary

Lower to Middle Palaeolithic flint handaxe found digging septic tank. One of two Lower Palaeolithic handaxes were found by Mr G J Drewett in the Garden of 'Deesden', 11 New Road, Bourne End. The object was found in an area of Taplow Gravel geology.

ROUGH MID ACHEULIAN PYRIFORM TYPE. ROUGHLY MADE WITH DEEP FLAKE SCARS & IRREGULAR PROFILE. SOME CORTEX REMAINING. MOTTLED PATINA. WELL ROLLED. (SKETCH). FOUND BY MR G DREWITT DURING INSTALLING OF SEPTIC TANK PRE-1961 (B1-2).

Two hand-axes were found in digging a septic tank in the garden of beesden, New Road, SU 897877, by Mr George Drewett some years ago; finds now in the County Museum, Aylesbury (Acc Nos 115-115.64) (B6).

The find was made in a cesspit at SU 89628749 in the rear garden of a house now called Gramyr, 11 New Road, but formerly 'Deesden', when it was occupied by Mr G Drewett, a local historian. Surveyed at 1:1250 (B8).
