Summary

Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic flint implements, a stone axe, Neolithic pottery and a few small sherds of Early Iron Age ware have been found in a brickyard at Marlow between 1925 and 1936. A single human skeleton was also found in 1925 and dated by Sir Arthur Keith as of 2nd or 3rd century. Description

VARIOUS PREHISTORIC & ROMAN FINDS COLLECTED FROM BRICKEARTH DEPOSITS QUARRIED AT BRICKYARD OPPOSITE LITTLE DENE (SEE CASS 05055). L TREACHER COLLECTED HERE BETWEEN 1925 & 1936. BRICKEARTH DEPOSIT C.1/2 MILE ACROSS & DUG OUT IN LONG 3FT-WIDE TRENCHES (B1,B9,B12).

SU 861873. A number of prehistoric artifacts were discovered by work men in a brick-earth pit, a mile NE of Great Marlow, between 1925and 1936. The finds, once the property of the late Llewellyn Treacher have been in the possession of F M Underhill since 1955. The collection includes Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic flint implements, a Group VI stone axe some Western Neolithic pottery, and a few small sherds of Early Iron Age ware. A single human skeleton was found in 1925 and dated by Sir Arthur Keith as of 2nd or 3rd century (B1).

The brickyard at SU 861873 (now overgrown) produced at least two Palaeolithic hand axes and a Levalloisian flake between 1928-32. The axes are in the Treacher Collection, Oxford University Museum and the flake is in Aylesbury Museum (B4).

The brick-earth pit, formerly owned by the Burnham and Marlow Brick Co, is now an area of wasteland; shortly to be developed. All the Buckingham finds in the Underhill collection are now in Aylesbury Museum. (B17).
