Description
Dimensions - Radius 21m, Width 2m.
Plan Form - Annular.
Small rectangular enclosure. Complex linear and curvilinear features. Single incomplete circle to S. Visible on 1962 St Joseph APs. Plotted (B1).
No trace on the ground. The location is on a tongue of gravel in the Thames flood-plain. Examination of the photographs indicates only one ring ditch at SU 80038387; the others appear to be natural soil marks. The ring ditch is about 42m in diameter, with a ditch about 2m wide. The eastern arc is overlaid by a modern hedge and it is impossible to determine whether there was an entrance. No distinctive marks occur within the interior. Plotted from air photographs (B2,B6).
Cropmarks plotted at 1:2,500 (B3).
1977 NMR AP shows a further square enclosure with a small ring at SE corner, E of the other features, centred at SU80208380 (B4).
SU 800836 Three ring ditches visible on air photographs (B5, B8).
Of the features described by the previous authority [B1] two possible Bronze Age round barrows, and a boundary ditch of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks and have been mapped from aerial photographs. They are defined by ring ditches with diameters of 40m and 20m and are centred at SU 8001 8387 and SU 8019 8379. The boundary ditch is situated between the two barrows and is 40m long. It is not clear if there is any relationship between it and the round barrows (Morph No.s TG.504.1.1-2.1). A possible E-W trackway, of unknown date, is also visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. It is defined by parallel ditches which are 80m long (Morph No. TG.504.3.1) (B7)
