Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out in September 2017 by Pre-Construct Archaeology in advance of proposed re-development for housing, identified a shallow undated ditch 0.94m wide and 0.25m deep aligned NW-SE, a pit 0.8m X 0.4m and 0.25m deep, a posthole 0.4m X 0.22m and 0.12m deep and the end of an irregular linear feature at least 2.05m long, 0.6m wide and 0.33m deep aligned NE-SW, in Trench 1. All the features were undated but suggested to be prehistoric or Roman in date. The other 5 trenches showed the extent of modern disturbance and truncation associated with the former printing works buildings, demolished in 1984. See report for detail (B1).
JW note: The shallow ditch appears to be parallel with the projected line of Akeman Street and 9.5m north of the centre-line of the road. Comparison with the excavated evidence from Billings Field [CAS 01050] suggests that the ditch might represent the inner-most flanking ditch of the Roman road. NGR to ditch in Trench 1.
