Description

Barn - Appears to post-date the stable. Northern part of the range. 6.5m x 8.5m, E to W. The eastern elevation was flush with the the stable, its western elevation projected beyond beyond the west wall of the stable. The east elevation was a plain brick-built gabled wall with a large entrance. Bricks generally laid in a Flemish Garden Wall Bond (Sussex Bond) 3 stretchers between 2 headers. Loose example indocates that the bricks were unfrogged. On average the bricks were 230mm x 110mm x 65mm, severl of the bricks having raised parallel skintle marks. The doorway may be a later insertion. Inner face of the jambs made good with a cement render and an RSJ was used as a lintel. Western gable end was plain. Red bricks in a flemish Garden Wall bond. Originally open-fronted to the north and subsequently enclosed with breeze blocks. Likely due to weakness of support post and pilasters which had become rotted. The roof is supported by 2 substantial Queen-Post trusses. Common rafters are roughly shaped.Plank ridge piece. No assembly marks were apparent (B1).
Stable - Rectangular footprint, 15.5m x 5.5m, aligned NNE-SSW. East elevation comprised 5 bays with top and bottom opening stable doors. 3 wooden hit-and-miss sliding-louver windows. Brickwork laid in Flemish Garden Wall bond. Bricks averaged 230mm x 110mm x 70mm, with raised, parallel Skintles. On the southern elevation was a virtical change in the brickwork. The west wall contained a central doorway blocked with modern bricks. The south gable elevation had a large opening blocked with breeze blocks. The stable was divided into 2 rooms. Eastern half of the floor was brick with a shallow drain the length of the building. The western half of the floor was concreted. The 4 trusses were fairly substantial King-Post trusses, purlins supported on the outer-chords. Assembly marks were visible on the north face of each of truss in he form of Roman numerals: I-III and V. Unclear why no IV, but possibly due to these being reclaimed /reused roofing structures. Roof appeard to have been re-surfaced. A loose tile bore the manufacturer stamp DREADNAUGHT (B1).
