Description

Possible D-shaped enclosure visible on 2003 aerial photographs. Enclosure appears to be earlier medieval boundary ditch 02468. Appears as cropmark on the west side and possible earthwork on the east (B1).

A L-shaped bank and ditch of medieval date, but possibly of earlier origins, is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 670 metres ESE of Nordens Farm and centred at SP 83163 27456, a slight curvilinear ditch that varies between 3 and 7 metres wide extends from a field boundary about 71 metres WNW-ESE, turning 75 metres SW back towards the field boundary. To the outside (NE and SE facing sides) of each ditch is a low earthwork bank, 9-11 metres wide. On the outside of the NE-facing bank is a narrow (2.5 metres wide) ditch. Visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 and 1946 as upstanding earthworks, on aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the bank features appear to have been plough levelled, whilst the ditches have been filled in, but are still visible. In the field immediately to the west, a block of post-medieval ridge and furrow was recorded from aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, but this has been levelled by 2019 and is no longer visible. However, there is a suggestion on the remote sensing data that the ditch from the field to the east continues W for about 15 metres as a very shallow, almost imperceptible earthwork, suggesting the ditch features described may be medieval or earlier (2-5).
