Description
Peat layer identified during geoarchaeological test pitting survey. Linked with Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic hunter-gatherer activity (B1).
Black peat became less peaty upwards and a gradual interaface between it and the overlying black clay silt. The silty layer likely represents a shallow water sedge-fen environment. Carbon dating of the peat layers provide a date range 10190 BC to 8460 BC, potentially to 6230 BC but this is a potential oulier in chronological modeling. Basal organic deposits show pollen assemblage typical of Late Glacial to Early Holoceneperiod. Low presence of tree taxa and high proportion of herbs is observed in many pollen sequences throught the Colne Valley. Mesolithic peat shows the expansion of woodland within the floodplain. Pine, Hazel, willow and birch becoming dominant. Late Mesolithic: Black clayey silt/black clay is common across the Colne Valley and is seen overlying archaeological scatters. The pollen assemblage shows dominance of of sedges, grasses, and burreed, interpreted as indicating sedge-reed swamp. (B2).
