Monument record 0796000000 - Coleman's Wood

D-shaped earthwork enclosure discovered by Chess Valley Archaeological & Historical Society in 2009 during fieldwork at adjacent earthwork site [CAS 05160]. Earthwork survey, metal-detecting, test-pitting and trial trenching carried out in 2009 and 2010 established that the enclosure comprised a bank up to 0.5m high with an external ditch along the NE side and a possible incurving entrance at the east. The ditch was 0.75m deep with steep sides and a flat base, the fill included large angular flints and large quantities of late Iron Age to early Roman pottery with many large unabraded re-fitting sherds. Test-pitting in the interior of the enclosure failed to identify any features or finds, however metal-detecting finds from the enclosure included several coins, a pin and a fragment of Bronze Age socketed axe (B1-2).
