Description

Sub-square banked enclosure within small wooded area. Identified on Environment Agency LiDAR. Break in bank at north-eastern corner, and a second break near the centre of the western bank. Parallel bank c5m west of the western bank. Internal dimensions c. 24m by 24m (B1).

A trapezoidal pond and associated water channels and banks of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 210m east of the site of the former Manor House at Maid’s Moreton (see MBC7632) and centred at SP 70901 35213. The trapezoidal pond is very clear on lidar visualisations and measures 30x33m at its largest. It has an inlet on the west side, from a water channel running from the north, and an outlet at the north east corner towards a curving ditch that remains as a field boundary. The area is under woodland on modern aerial photographs. A map of Maids Moreton from 1595 shows the pond with a water channel leaving it; Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 maps show lines of trees around the outside of the pond but not the actual earthwork itself. Ridge and furrow field system fit around the earthworks of the pond and the water channels. There may be a building platform, measuring 15x7m to the west of the pond. (2-7)
