Description

Furrows of ridge and furrow cultivation were identified across the site on a NE-SW alignment. Late medieval to early post-med roof tile was recovered from one of the furrows.(B1)
A distinct area, defined by two NW-SE aligned ditches, appears to have been set aside for quarrying at the north-eastern end of the furrows. The majority of the quarry pits seem to follow the depressions of the furrows – each groups of pits located in a linear fashion presumably to exploit the already reduced ground level. The shape of the quarry pits varied considerably, with rectangular, oval, and irregular, and measured up to 12m long and 4.25m wide. A small amount of medieval and post-medieval pottery and roof tile were recovered from the pits suggesting that they date from the later medieval to early post-medieval.
The location of the pits suggests they were positioned to extract the mix of gravel and siltier chalk/ calcareous clay deposits within this area. (B1)
Two broadly parallel ditches, aligned NE-SW, and 4.3m to 5.3m apart, form a possible boundary or route-way. The ditches were up to 0.80m wide and 0.06m deep and over 40m in length. A single sherd of late medieval to early post-medieval pottery was recovered from the fill of the western ditch.(B1)
1500-1750-Second and third phases of furrows aligned NE-SW(B1)
