Description

The majority of features date from the late Iron Age to 1st century AD or the 3rd to 4th centuries comprising ditches forming boundaries and enclsoures. The relative abundance of Roman CBM may indicate the presence of Roman structure within the vicinity. Alternatively the enclosures could have acted as paddocks for livestock rather than a focus of habitation (B1).
*Late IA to Early RB* Two intercutting ditches aligned NW-SE. Five sherds of Late Iron Age to 1st-century Roman pottery were recovered from one of the ditches. Both ditches are considered to be contemporary. Located c24m to the east were a series of broadly contemporary ditches also aligned NW-SE. Mid 1st-century AD pottery was recovered from two of these ditches. To the SE were three more intercutting ditches. The earliest of these contained mid-1st-century AD pottery. The later of the features contained 1st-century AD pottery (B1).
*2-4th-century* Two parallel ditches c18m apart were aligned NW-SE. Both had a similar stepped profile. The eastern most ditch contained 11 sherds of 4th-century pottery. The fill of western ditch indicated a slow accumulation of material and contained Roman and early to middle Saxon pottery. A NE-SW aligned ditch terminates centrally in Area C and has a similar profile to the NW aligned ditches. 3rd to 4th century pottery was recovered from its upper fill, with Roman brick and tile also found. Two further parallel ditches were broadly dated to the Roman period (B1).
