Description

Weir 2: linear concrete structure aligned NE-SW, with a brick and concrete wing wall that extended upstream on the SW bank. Tapered towards its centre where there was a gap with a wider slot, likely for a small sluice gate. The weir was 8.40m long, 0.49m high. The wing wall was constructed of red brick and measured 4.75m long, 0.37m wide, and 0.40m high, with 5 courses of brick visible. Weir 2 was demolished in 29-30th January 2018. Photographic survey identified 2 weirs potentially associated with the watercress industry. It is possible that the stream was widened in this area to improve conditions for watercress production. OS mapping indicates that Weir 1 and 2 were constructed between 1925 and 1963 (1).
