Description
Pair of farm cottages, now one. C1870. By George Devey. For William Oxenden Hammond Esq of Nonington Court, Kent, principal landowner in the hamlet of Bourton. Red brick in English bond to ground floor, timber-framed to 1st floor with rendered, pebbledashed infill, plain-tile roof and brick lateral stacks. Combined L-plans or zigzag plan. 2-storey, 2-window range. Chamfered, Tudor-arched brick doorway just left of projecting cross wing to right end, leading to open internal porch with small square window to back wall and door to left inside. 4-light casement window to ground floor left of door set in segmental-arched surround with blank tympanum and small 1-light casement to ground floor far left with flat-arched head. Between the windows a large projecting front lateral stack with diaper pattern in purple headers. Timber-framed first floor in moulded bressumer with rectangular panels. 2-light casement in dormer gable above doorway. Cross wing projects to right end and has similar 4-light casement to ground floor and curved stone brackets either end of front supporting oversail of timber-framed 1st floor. 3-light casement to gable. Both gables have moulded bargeboards and pendant finials. C20 porch to right of cross wing. Large projecting lateral stack to right side of cross wing has 4 brick diagonal flues. Diaper pattern to roof in darker tiles on this side. Left end elevation of main block has an oversail on curved stone brackets and 3-light casement to gable. Full-height wing to rear left. Rear elevation has no exposed timbers, casement window in dormer gable. Tile-hung dormer and wing gables. INTERIOR not inspected (B2).
