Description
After ploughing in 2011 two distinct areas of very dark and unusually rich soil were noted, covering an area of approximately 150 diameter, contrasting with the local lighter soils. The areas contained large amounts of slag. LiDAR images appeared to indicate anomalies that could be interpreted as a series of small buildings. One small circular feature provided a very strong metal detector signal. A trial trench was centred on this point. The base of the furnace remains in situ below the plough soil. 41 samples collected (B1).
