Description

Probable 19th century dene hole identified during strip, map and sample excavation carried out by Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd in August 2012 in advance of brickearth extraction. A shallow depression 15m in diameter with a central circular area of dark brown flinty clayey soil, 8m in diameter, had all the characteristics of a ‘dene-hole’ dug to extract chalk probably in the 19th century. The feature was not excavated and remains in-situ. See report for detail (B1).
