Description

Possible 17th century timber-framed house, with rear cat slide roof and two external rear chimneys stacks with coursed stone bases. The roof was raised and the external walls rebuilt or cased in brick, possibly in the 19th century. A late 19th century or early 20th century photograph shows the house was formerly thatched and had timber casement windows with timber lintels to ground and first floor and was apparently two dwellings. The roof has subsequently been replaced in tile, the building amalgamated into a single dwelling, the windows replaced and the top of both end gables and rear wall rendered in pebbledash with applied false timbering. The rear lean-to may also be 20th century. The former wall plate is visible in the rear (west) wall and the ends of at least two former rafters protrude out of the rear wall. The former rafters and a tie beam are visible in the upper floor adjacent to an inserted internal door. One of the ground floor fireplaces has a substantial timber bressemer and brick bread oven (B1).
Put forward for listing, but rejected (see report in parish folder), a NDHA for following reasons:
Evidential value – believed to have been two cottages the building, also because of its location, construction and fabric, demonstrates the development of the settlement.
Historic value – fabric from the C17th and C18th survives, as well as later, C19th and C20th, all of which (especially the first two) hold historic value.
Architectural interest – the exposed timber frame, brick gable, small openings and overall form have architectural interest, especially given the link to the historic and evidential value (B2).
