Description
On the east side of Frogmoor, replacing the original Palace cinema on the west side, which burned down (B1).
The Palace Cinema was designed in a mock Tudor style by Gilbert W Booth, with interior design by De Jong & Co, and opened on 2nd December 1922. There was seating for 1,226 people: 930 in the stalls and 296 in the circle. In 1938 the cinema was modernised in an Art Deco style and enlarged to seat 1,650 people, with a cafe and dance hall added. The cinema closed on 21st September 1983, the last film screening was 'Psycho II'. Following demolition, the site was redeveloped as the Chilterns shopping centre (B2).
