  • FARMSTEAD (Iron Age - 800 BC to 42 AD)

Description

7 ditches and 1 gully were identified (all aligned near north-south). Mid Iron Age pottery was recovered from 2 of these features, but it is likely that the other features are of similar date. Possibly small Iron Age farmstead (B1).
The earliest features are tentatively dated to the Middle to Late Iron Age and consist of a number of linear features. The longevity of use of similar pottery fabrics makes chronological precision impossible based on such a small assemblage, lacking diagnostic forms or decoration. Stratigraphically there are certainly at least two phases, and ceramically possibly more. Single inhumation burial was found at the base of ditch terminus. A grave cut was not visible although this may be a result of the waterlogged environment of the ditch at the time of excavation. The body was in a crouched position and aligned in a NW (head) to SE direction. The skeleton lay on its left side, with the head turned to the right. The condition of the bone was exceptionally poor during excavation. The skull had been truncated on its left side, as well as the left side of the upper body and the knee areas were absent. The pelvis and vertebral column were also absent. (B2).
Possible Bronze Age activity is represented by two intercutting, N-S aligned, ditches in Area A and two further features in Area C; a ditch and slightly curving gully. 6 sherds of Roman pottery were recoverd, but these most likely to be residual. Only one sherd in a context and often with sherds of earlier or later date (B3).
