  • DITCH (Post-Medieval to Modern - 1540 AD to 1999 AD)
  • RAMPART? (Post-Medieval to Modern - 1540 AD to 1999 AD)

Description

It is uncertain whether these ditches related to Bishiopstone Road, or the line of an earlier field boundary. An extract from the Buckinghamshire Enclosure Acts depicts Bishopstone Road as a field boundary separating the site from the field immediately to the south-west. An additional possibilty is that the ditches relate to the creation and/or upkeep of an adjacent earthwork/rampart tentatively suggested to date from the English Civil War (1642/1651). Other earthworks possibly relating to this conflict have been identified to the south of the site (B1).
Earthwork may represent upcast from the creation of adjacent boundary ditches. The lack of fetures relating to the post-medieval site indicate that the site remained a fundamentally rural settlement with continued use as farmland. (B2).
