Description

Dimensions - Length 697m
Plan Form - LINEAR
Bryant's 1825 county map shows a turpike road running south from the main Hatfield to Reading turnpike, along Marlow High Street and crossing the Thames at St Peter's Street (B2).
The turnpike is shown on the 1st edition 25-inch and 6-inch OS maps continuing SSW through Bisham, Burchett's Green and joining the A4 Bath Road between Littlewick Green and Knowl Hill. The OS map shows a turnpike gate at Bisham and mileposts marked with distances from London and 'Hartfield' and from Reading and Marlow (B3).
The story of the origins of this turnpike road appears in Cecil Roberts' book 'And so to Bath'. The Marquess of Salisbury (at Hatfield) and the Earl of Essex (at Cassiobury, Watford), both had gout and visited Bath each year for treatment. They promoted their own road from Hatfield which crossed the Thames at Marlow and joined the Bath Road at Knowl Hill, which reduced the distance by about 20 miles. The mileposts on this road are all from an identical cast-iron mould and give the distance to Hatfield at the top (B1).
