- BOMBING DECOY SITE (Modern - 1939 AD to 1945 AD)
Description
World War II daytime bombing decoy designed to deflect enemy precision bombing atttacks from the adjacent Air Ministry communications centre. Construction of the decoy was requested by the Air Ministry in June 1940 and apparently completed by the end of the month. The decoy was 650 yards from the parent, on a bearing of 135 degrees [SE]. It is not clear how successful the decoy was or how long it was in operation, but the last documented reference to it was on 1st March 1942 (B1).
NGR cited in B1 is clearly incorrect: over 1,600 yards S of the main transmitter site. NGR estimated from description in B1.
Aerial photography from 1946 shows five dummy buildings on the site located at SP 980 170 (B2).
The 'K-type' decoy for Dagnall, along with the decoy at Leighton Buzzard, were the longest operating 'K-type' day decoys, running up until 1944 (B3).
