Description

Site F, lies at the eastern end of the Aylesbury Woodlands development. It comprises a small sub-rectangular enclosure, originally identified as a cropmark, and located through geophysical survey (B1).
Features recorded in the trenches broadly match those identified by the geophysical survey. The rectangular enclosure matching the cropmarks. It's likely that the enclosure and and other features relate to the ditches and mortuary structure partially excavated during Thames Water pipeline excavation (B2).
Five ditches identified during trial trench evaluation in south-western corner of field east of College Road North, 2 containing fragments of Roman pottery (B3).

A subrectangular enclosure and linear features of Iron Age/Romano-British date are visible on historic aerial photographs as extant cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 250m south east of College Farm, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 87185 13457. The subrectangular enclosure measures approximately 40x26m and two maculae visible in the interior. It is crossed by a linear cropmark that also crosses cropmarks of ridge and furrow field system but not on the same alignment as these, nor is it parallel to any existing of former field boundaries shown on historic mapping. Other curved linear cropmarks and part of a possible subrectangular enclosure are visible to the south. The majority of this are had been ploughed flat by 1944 although cropmarks of medieval ridge and furrow are visible across the field and these fit in to the pattern in the surrounding fields, the boundaries of which overlie the ridge and furrow. No cropmarks were visible on the 1940s aerial photographs but these were flown in January, when crop marks are less likely to show.(5-7)
