Description

Site C located in the south-western part of the Aylesbury Woodlands development area. It comprises a complex of of enclosure ditches and associated features of probable Iron Age to Roman date. Remains cover an area of at least 2ha, but their full extent is unclear. A trapezoidal enclosure, 140m long and 90m wide, forms the main core. Smaller rectilinear enclosures are appended to these ditches, perhaps defining field boundaries and trackways, project to the north and south. Within the enclosure fragmentary linear anomalies appear to define small rectilinear enclosures. Centrally to these a small enhancement of magnetic noise may indicate debris of a small Roman building (B1).
A large trapezoidal enclosure was defined by a large V-shaped ditch, c 2.50m wide and 1.20m deep. Interior features indicate sub-division of the enclsoure. The pottery assemblage shows usage during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The presence of 4th century coins in the topsoil perhaps indicate that it was abandoned by the 4th century. A small rectangular enclosure, 43m long and 18m wide, was located on the northern boundary. A second rectangular enclsoure, 65m long and 21m wide, was located against the southern boundary of the enclosure. It was defioned by a ditch 1.30m wide and 0.40m deep. Further ditches, pits, and gullies were identified to the south-east of the trapezoidal enclosure (B2).
