- PUBLIC HOUSE (First mentioned 1861, 19th Century - 1800 AD to 1899 AD)
Description
A plain, rendered public house fronting onto Buckingham Road, of three bays and two storeys, without distinguishing features. A single-storey extension to the north has a cellared outshot to the rear. The Britannia is documented from the 1861 census, when it was occupied by James Radwell, beer house keeper and sawyer. The building is not shown on the 1771 Aylesbury Enclosure map or the 1809 Eye plan but is shown on the 1879 1:500 OS town map as 'Britannia Inn' (B1).
The construction of the Britannia Inn in the 19th century would have impacted on the site considerably, thus potentially truncating any earlier activity on the site. However, the Prebendal excavations suggest that the northern limit of the site was along the southern side of Buckingham Street. It is therefore possible that the development site lies outside the Iron Age settlement (B4).
