Description
An extensive field system on the south-west face of Clipper Down. These include a lynchet bank 1.2m high and sporadically topped by very old coppice. A substantial lynchet up to c10m in height around a field shown on historic mapping as 'Inkum Wyke'. It towers above the ditch below suggesting some form of deliberate cutting to to terrace the slope. The top also contains some very mature grown out coppice. Substantial lynchet bank, lynchetted into the contour of the hill, c8m wide and dropping c 3m. Traces of an adjacent ditch c 2m wide and 0.20m deep. Feature does not appear on historic mapping, and may represent a shallow trackway along the upper ridge of the down. Features have been interpreted as prehistoric to Roman, but may have had use into the medieval period. Rectilinear double-ditched enclosure identified in germinating crop. Internal dimensions 25m N-S and 30 E-W (B1).
