  • BOUNDARY DITCH (12th Century to Post-Medieval - 1100 AD? to 1798 AD?)

Description

Remains of a ditch, also identified in the trial trenching, that runs obliquely to the plan of the 1555 house. The feature does not appear clearly on the previous geophysics survey. Its exisitence as a parkland boundary was suggested as a result of the trial trenching. It is also possible that this may represent an early form of fortification for the Manor House. Unabraided 12th-century pottery was recovered from the ditch backfill (B24).
