Description
Geophysical survey carried out by ArchaeoPhysica in Agust 2012 in advance of proposed crematorium development, identified weak ditch fill-type anomalies possibly defining a small sub-rectangular enclosure aligned N-S with a possible entrance at the north end and a curving southern end. A stronger E-W linear anomaly south of the enclosure is interpreted as a field boundary ditch (B1).
Evaluation trial trenching by Cotswold Archaeology in September 2012 confirmed the presence of an enclosure located close to the crest of the hill, 50m long by 27m wide and enclosing an area of 0.12ha. The eastern side of the enclosure ditch is 2.5m wide and 0.83m deep, with a V-shaped profile. Middle Iron Age pottery was recovered close to the ditch base. The north-western corner of the enclosure was 2.10m wide. Within the enclsoure is a slightly curvilinear gully, 0.35m wide and 0.10m deep, middle iron Age pottery was recovered from its fill. A roughly circular pit, 1.40m diameter and 0.19m deep, was located c.4m north-west of the gully. Four undated ditches were also located outside the enclosure (B2).
