Description

A set of weak positive rectilinear anomalies lies in the northern part of Area 4 (B1)
Rectilinear enclsoures typical of a small area of [Iron Age-Roman] settlement. Possible ring ditch and pit-like anomalies; some of these could indicate areas of intense burning or even fired features (small kilns, ovens, or metal working activity). Core of habbitation appears to be the boundary between Areas 4 and 6 (B2).
[Romano-British and Iron Age pottery found in the fields around Hartwell Depot suggest that the settlement extends north into these fields]
Area 7, centred on a low-lying ridge within the floodplain, identified an enclosure with a number of discrete features, the presence of which was confirmed by the evaluation. Two west–east orientated inhumation burials were also identified within Trench 46 and are suggestive of a Christian burial rite, suggesting a Romano-British date. It is likely the burials relate to an enclosed farmstead/community occupying the ridge. The finds recovered are indicative of a domestic settlement. (B3).
Field 2- Late Bronze Age (1100BC) to early Iron Age (400BC) ditches and a posthole were identified during evaluation. One ditch containing horse skull. Pottery sherds and flint flakes were recovered from the ditches, 4 sherds of Bronze Age pottery were recovered from the posthole. Two late Iron Age to Roman (100BC - AD250) ditches were also identified. Towards the south of Field 2 were 2 undated inhumation burials. Both aligned north-south suggesting pre-Christian burials (B4).
