Description

Former village school with possible C17 origins. Attractive part stone, part brick cottage located on the eastern periphery of the village within the immediate setting of The Holy Cross and St. Mary’s church. Altered and refurbished in the 1850s, the school was eventually moved in 1899 to its present site on Lower Street and the old school building was used for meetings and entertainment continuing in use as a village hall until the Memorial Hall was built in 1924. In 1991 the building was sold and converted to a private residence. Two storeys in height, the building sits beneath a shallow pitched gable roof laid in slate. The building is simple in plan form and articulation. Five bays with the central bay contained within a projecting gable. The building has a very regular fenestration pattern. It’s location - set back from the road, on rising land on the bend, makes the building visually prominent. The building is significant because of its age and because of its former role as a village school and community hall. It is also prominently located within the setting of the church. Local Heritage Asset in conservation area (B1).
The school is partly supported from the funds of Lady Say and Sele's Charity. The school-house, situated close to the churchyard, is a neat building, erected in 1851. About 50 children attend [1862] (B2).
