Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out in 2016 by Cotswold Archaology in advance of proposed residential development identified two ditches in Trench 3, sealed by the subsoil, suggesting a probable medieval date. In the centre of the trench was north-east aligned ditch, 0.40m wide and 0.15m deep. This was cut by a small ditch. At the northern end of the trench was a north-west aligned ditch, 1.45m wide and 0.36m deep.
In the centre of Trench 6 were two north-east aligned, parallel, ditches, c6m apart. Both were 0.35 wide and 0.15m deep. Ditch 605 terminated within the trench. A pit, containing domestic refuse, was located the northern end of the trench. The feature has been interpreted as a midden associated with the 19th century occupation of Park Farm.
In Trench 8 a north-east aligned ditch was located in the south-western end of the trench. It was 1.35m wide and 0.38m deep, and contained an homogeneous fill of mid whitish-grey silty-clay from which a small assemblage of animal bone was recovered (B1).
Further trial trenching was carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in August and September 2018. A number of ditches in evaluation Trench 9 remained undated. No dateable finds were recovered and lay too far away from other features for any relationships to be apparent. Two ditches also lay on different alignments to all other linear features on site (B3-4).
