Description

Evaluation trial trenching in 2016 by Cotswold Archaeology in advance of proposed residential development identied features in trenches 1-3. Passing down the length of Trench 1 on a north-east to south-west alignment was a wide and shallow ditch, 1.80m wide and 0.52m deep.
A recut on the same alignment, slightly off centre, was 1.15m wide and 0.36m deep. Two sherds of Roman pottery, one heavily abraded, were recovered. Other considerations suggest that the ditch is medieval, although a Roman date should not be ruled out.
A pit at the western end of the trench was 1.85m long and 0.90m wide. It was excavated to a depth of 0.25m, but rapid ingress of groundwater meant the feature could not be fully excavated (B1).
Subsequent excavation was carried out by Cotsold Archaeology in 2018. In the c12th century a series of NE-SW/NW-SE aligned ditches, up to 1.20m wide and 0.35m deep, were dug forming a number of small agricultural enclosures, all roughly parallel with both arms of Church Lane. Further ditches represent sub-division of the enclosures, and several pits were identified within the enclosures. The enclosures were slightly modified with a more extensive NW-SE aligned ditch, upto 2m and 0.5m deep, excavated within the same period. Later within the medieval period the enclosures underwent substantial modification and reorganisation, with several ditches cut through earlier, infilled/silted, ditches (B3-4).
