Description
Evaluation trial trenching by John Moore Heritage Services in January 2016 recorded in Trench 1 a group of 6 postholes aligned north-north-east to south-south-west, spaced 1.20m - 3.50m apart, with evidence of stone packing in 3 of the 4 excavated and 19th century pottery and modern brick recovered from several of the fills. The post holes were interpretted as the remains of a fence-line shown on the 1881 first edition 25-inch OS map. Close to the north end of the trench was a large natural depression. A leveling layer, containing brick, overlay the the natural depression and postholes. In Trench 2 residual finds of mid 11th - 17th century pottery, clay tobacco pipe, brick, tile and animal bone were recovered from the subsoil. There were no archaeological finds or features in Trench 3 (B1).
