Description

An oval on the very western edge of Trench 2, had steep edges that stepped slightly towards a concave base. 1.26m in diameter and 0.50m deep. Roman pottery dated to the 2nd century was recovered from its fills. Five further linear features were identified… all orientated north-south. Two of these ditches contained later Roman pottery, dated to between the 3rd and 4th centuries (2).

Five features were identified within Trench 3. Four of these have been interpreted as ditches.
Ditches [307], [310] and [313] were aligned NNE-SSW. Ditch [307] was 3m wide and 1.35m deep, with v-shaped profile and produced a large fragment of Roman floot tile. Pottery was recovered from ditches [310] and [313] dating to the 3rd - 4th centuries. Ditch [317] was aligned NNW-SSE. Its different alignment may indicate a different phase of occupation (2).

Two ditch like features were identified within Trench 4, aligned NE-SW and ESE-WNW. Both had irregular shallow edges and an uneven base. It is suggested that these may be natural in origin (2).

In Trench 9 two opposing curvilinear ditches were identifed. Both had U-shaped profiles with a flat base. Ditch [906] produced 4 sherds of later prehistoric shelly ware (which continued use into the early Roman period). In the opposing ditch [909] a fragment of medieval/post-medieval pottery was recovered from the very top of the feature. This sherd may just represent the later activity in the area and be out of context. It is possible that these ditches form a single penannular ditch of a possible enclosure or roundhouse (2).
