Description
Trial trenching carried out by Thames Valley Archaeological Service in September 2014 in advance of construction of a new house found evidence for early medieval industrial and domestic activity and possible property boundaries in the form of shallow gullies. In Trench 1 a gully aligned NE-SW and at least 6.5m long, 0.5m wide and 0.12m deep was found with a single sherd of pottery in the fill. In Trench 2 a gully at least 6m long, 0.7m wide and 0.08m deep, aligned NW-SE, became progessively wider and deeper before turning at right angles to a NE-SW alignment, where it was 1.1m wide and 0.45m deep, (although it is possible that a pit cut through the gully at this point). The fill of the gully/pit contained pottery, animal bone, slag and fired clay. The pottery suggests a mid or late 11th century to 12th century date. See report for detail. NGR to centre (B1).
