Monument record 0771100000 - Land at The Vine, Shabbington

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by TVAS in May 2015 found shallow Medieval boundary ditches, pits and a gully in advance of a proposed small housing development, suggesting the site was in domestic occupation in the late Saxon and early Medieval periods, whilst the pottery shows that the main period of activity was from the late 11th century to the 13th or 14th century. 2 pits, a narrow ditch aligned NW-SE and a gully aligned NE-SW were found in Trench 1. In Trench 2, 2 wide parallel boundary ditches 0.2m apart, aligned NE-SW and a narrow ditch aligned NW-SE may have formed two side of a property boundary. Excavation revealed a number of mainly linear features but also several pits. It is likely that the linear features form part of one or more crofts of the medieval village. The house outside of the excavation area. A small collection of animal bone and charred plant remains, including wheat and oat, were also recovered (B2).
