Description
The original steam-powered flour mill of Mr J Taylor was established around 1850 alongside the large pond which stretched from Silk Street to Back Road, fed by the Wottesbroke. Although local wheat flour was milled here, the main product was animal feed derived from imported grain. The mill chimney was a landmark easily visible from Lodge Hill and spoiled the view from the Manor, before Mr Taylor was persuaded to move the mill to new premises on Quainton Road in 1893 [CASS 14785]. The mill machinery was transferred to the new building and the old mill was demolished, the site being absorbed into the grounds of the Five Arrows Hotel (B1).
'Steam Mill (Corn)' marked on 1st edition 25-inch OS map at NGR (B2).
