Description
The Rothschild's gasworks at Buckland Wharf supplied Green Park, using coal unloaded at the canal wharf. The gasworks consisted of a gas holder with cottages either side of it. By 1899 an outbuilding possibly a coal store, had been erected parallel to the canal (B1).
Presumably one of the 'cottages' must have been the retort house. Historic mapping and APs show that the gasometer had been removed by the late 1950s but the other buildings are still present although now in use as private houses (B2).
Aston Clinton Gasworks were built for Sir Anthony de Rothschild by Mr James Copcutt, contractor, of
Aylesbury in 1872. A small gasworks was built at Buckland Wharf on the canal shown on the 1878-1926 OS maps. It supplied Aston Clinton Park and was able to supply the villages of Aston Clinton and Buckland as well, which were largely owned by Sir Anthony de Rothschild. Not known if anything survives [in 2020] (B3).
