Description

Probable nineteenth century cast iron milepost on Buckingham to Brill road one mile outside Brill may be missing. Not on historic OS mapping or current OS. Should read Brill 1 Buck 13. Information from Max Davies: No sign of last 2 mile posts Brill 2 Buck 12: Brill 1 Buck 13. Illustration annotated: Metal mile posts on Buckingham to Brill road. No makers name. All similar design, with Parish on top, mileage to Brill on L, mileage to Buckingham on R (B1).
The Buckingham to Brill Road was not turnpiked so the Highway authority errected milemarkers along this C road. Standard Bucks Pressed steel mileposts put up by the 1880s to 1890s after the turnpike era. These were standardised smooth white faces with destinations and mileages painted in black. The County Council probably put these up. The Milestones Society calls them Bucks Pressings. 116 survive out of a posible 230 milemarkers in Bucks known from old sources (B2).
Mileposts 1 and 2 not shown on OS mapping and not recorded in fieldwork. Either never set up or went missing before 1899?
