Description

Geophyisical survey carried out in July 2013 by Stratascan in advance of proposed residential development identified a number of widely-spaced parallel linear anomalies aligned NE-SW in the north of the field, interpreted as the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. See report for details (B1).
Subsequent evaluation trial trenching by Northants Archaeology in September 2013 in advance of proposed residential development identified a single circular Medieval pit 1.02m in diameter and 0.46m deep with steep sides and flat base in Trench 1. A sherd of Medieval greyware pottery and fragment of animal bone were recovered from the pit fill. Medieval to post-medieval plough furrows aligned NE-SW in trench 1 and E-W in trench 4 were also recorded. See report for detail (B2).
wide ditch-like feature (0207/0311) has the appearance of a sunken track or holloway. The U-shaped channels seen in the sections of the feature in Trenches 2 and 3 are very likely to be wheel ruts that became widened over time due to the waterlogging of the clay ground. Gully on the NE side of this running parallel is likely to be a contemporary drainage channel cut on the NE side of the track(B4)
