Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Archaeological Solutions in June 2013 identified a number of Roman ditches and pits in trenches 5, 6 and 8 with finds of pottery dating from the 1st to 2nd centuries AD, suggesting the presence in the vicinity of a Roman domestic settlement such as a farmstead. Additional undated pits, ditches and posthole were also identified in trenches 2-6 and 12, and the remains of medieval or post-medieval plough furrows were found in most trenches. See report for detail (B1).
Roman farmstead confirmed through excavation. Originating in the early to mid Iron Age as an 'open' farming area comrising of several shallow gullies and a discrete pit. In the early to mid-1st century the main farmstead was created with a boundary ditch, a rectangular enclosure forming a stock corral, pit clusters, and the creation of a ditched routeway, with some evidence of a possible metalled surface. The routeway ditches were recut atleast 3 times. A field system was also formed at this time. A pit within one the fields contained a cattle skeleton excluding the head. During the 2nd to 4th centuries the settlement was replanned with a large enclosure replacing the routeway and field system (B2).
