Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in December 2009 in advance of proposed residential development identified 3 ditches, interpreted as Roman field boundaries. Two ditches were undated but had a similar fill to the dated ditch and are probably Roman in date. Trench 4 contained a NE-SW alingned ditch, 1.4m wide and 0.36m deep, with sloping sides and rounded base, and a single sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from the filll. Adjacent to this was a N-S aligned ditch 3.57m wide and 0.23m deep with steep sides and flat base. Trench 2 contained a NW-SE alingned ditch 0.9m wide and 0.35m deep with sloping sides and a rounded base. 7 Medieval to post-medieval cultivation furrows 0.6m-3m wide, aligned E-W and NE-SW were identified in Trenches 1 and 3 and ridge and furrow survived as slight earthworks across the field. See report for detail (B1).
