Description

Geophysical survey by ArchaeoPhysica Ltd in August 2011 in advance of proposed gravel quarrying identified a small number of anomalies interpreted as possible Romano-Britsh ditched trackway, enclosure, pits and field boundaries. See report for detail (B1).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in August 2011 revealed a potential later prehistoric ditched trackway aligned roughly N-S, along with evidence for prehistoric activity in the northern half of the site, although the precise date and character of this was unclear. Evidence for early Roman activity was also found, in the form of occasional sherds of pottery, but, again, the nature of the activity was unclear. For both periods, the low numbers of finds recovered suggests that the activity was not related to settlement on the site. Evidence for medieval agriculture, in the form of remnants of plough furrows, was found across much of the site, truncated by more recent ploughing. A field boundary ditch shown on the 1809 enclosure map, was located in the NE corner of the site and, along with a number of other features in this area, is likely to be of post-medieval date; early medieval pottery recovered from this feature is considered residual. See report for detail (B2).
