Probable eighteenth to nineteenth century metal milepost may be missing. Confirmed by handwritten notes on OS draft Surveyors Drawings (1814 ) and OS 1 inch (1835). Buckingham to Towcester route (I2). Inscription: Buckingham 5 Towcester 5. Not on current OS but shown on historic OS mapping in Lillingstone Lovell parish. [Handwritten notes] (B1).
In Peter Gullands extensive study of The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire 1706-1881 with their connections into neighbouring counties this milepost is on The Buckingham to Towcester Turnpike Road 1824 p.283 road 23.There are 5 1/4 miles in Bucks from High Street and Moreton Road junction in Buckingham. Cast iron mileposts with raised capital letters installed by the turnpike trust. All on weataide o0f reoad.The truat was formed in 1824 to improve route to Buckingham after the owner of Stowe extened his park ovr orinal old raod in 1750a many amall rods ere relaced by Trust Only one left is in Maids Moreton Village. This is one of 230 milemarkers in Bucks according to sources according to PG 116 have modern records. During WW2 milemarkers were removed for security and were not always put back correctly or at all.The milepost on a house in Lillingstone Lovell village is a concrete replica but does not look so authentic as the real post. After the tuusts closed in the 1880s and 1890s on some roads parish or distrct or county replaced missing milemarkers with what the the Milestones Society calls Bucks Pressings standardised metal posts with 2 white faces and black lettering.
