Description

TRADITION - USED TO BE SEVERAL COTTAGES & SMALL INN NR HALL END. FARMER SAYS FOUNDATION STONES OFTEN UNEARTHED (B2).
MOST PROB PLATFORMS CENTRED SP8250 1090 - PLOUGHING MADE THEM UNCLEAR. ACCORDING TO FARMER ROW OF COTTAGES STOOD THERE TILL BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY. CONFIRMED BY MAPS OF 1788 & 1825 (B5).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by L-P Archaeology from July to September 2018 in advance of construction of HS2 railway and bypass, confirmed the presence of ditched enclosures identified by an earlier geophysical survey. In Trench 18 a curving NE-SW aligned shallow ditch was identified with animal bone and Medieval pottery of the late 12th to early 13th century in the ditch fill. See report for detail (B8).
