Description

TRADITION - USED TO BE SEVERAL COTTAGES & SMALL INN NR HALL END. FARMER SAYS FOUNDATION STONES OFTEN UNEARTHED (B2).
MOST PROB PLATFORMS CENTRED SP8250 1090 - PLOUGHING MADE THEM UNCLEAR. ACCORDING TO FARMER ROW OF COTTAGES STOOD THERE TILL BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY. CONFIRMED BY MAPS OF 1788 & 1825 (B5).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by L-P Archaeology from July to September 2018 in advance of construction of HS2 railway and bypass, confirmed the presence of ditched enclosures identified by an earlier geophysical survey. In Trench 18 a curving NE-SW aligned shallow ditch was identified with animal bone and Medieval pottery of the late 12th to early 13th century in the ditch fill. See report for detail (B8).
Medieval features identified during excavation as part of SEALR. A rectangular-shaped feature, possibly a structure, was enclosed by a series of boundary ditches which had been frequently recut. A cess pit containing medieval finds was located to the south of the possible structure (B9).

Possible formal gardens and site of manor house of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 110m to the north west of Hall End Farmhouse (see MBC3381) and centred at SP 82428 10865. Subrectangular earthworks of a probable manor site with formal gardens and trackways are visible as clear earthworks in 1945. Possible building platforms can also be seen within the earthworks. The earthworks of the formal garden fit within the ridge and furrow field systems, also visible as earthworks in 1945. Aerial photographs from 1961 and 1967 show that land use for this area had changed to arable and the area had been ploughed, and fields amalgamated, leaving the earthworks much less clear. Lidar visualisations, captured before the works for the HS2 link road, show these earthworks remained although they were much reduced. (10-14)
