Description

Evaluation trial trenching by John Moore Heritage Services in August 2012 identified the edge of a medieval quarry pit over 2m wide and over 1.25m deep; four undated postholes, and an undated boundary ditch 1.3m wide and 0.5m deep, aligned NE-SW, possibly associated with the late Saxon boundary ditches identified by Oxford Archaeology in 2004 (CAS 08398). A single course of roughly squared chalk blocks at least 2m X 1m, are interpreted as wall footings forming the corner of a large building of 16th century or possibly late Medieval date. Pottery recovered from the subsoil suggest that the main period of activity occured from the mid 11th century to the 13th or 14th century. See report for detail (B1).
A subsequent watching brief carried out by John Moore Heritage Services in January and May 2013 during groundworks for construction of a new house, garage and access drive identified 3 small undated pits or postholes, the ditch and quarry found during the evaluation, and another undated ditch, aligned N-S but not fully visible in the section. See report for detail (B2).
