Description

The Grand Pavilion opened in 1925, was enlarged in 1936 and became the Granada in 1947 (B1).
The Grand Pavilion Cinema was originally designed by C H Wright and opened on 2nd March 1925 with seating for 800. Later renamed the Pavilion Cinema, it was enlarged and remodelled to designs by Robert Cromie in 1936, re-opening on 4th January 1937 with seating for 1,234. The new Art Deco design included a tall narrow frontage with two narrow vertical windows flanking a wider central window. The entrance passageway leads to the auditorium at the rear, built behind adjacent shops and parallel to the High Street. Renamed the Granada in 1947, following a change of ownership. The cinema was closed on 7th October1972 and converted to a Bingo Hall, initially run by Granada, but from May 1991 by Gala Bingo (B2).
