Description

('A' SP 87902269) Fishpond (NR) ('B' SP 87662266) Fishpond (NR) (1).
FISHPOND (MEDIEVAL), PRIORS? (B2).
A second fishpond, immediately to the NE, at NGR SP87725 22740 is shown on the 1st edition 6 inch OS map of 1885 (B3).

Two medieval fishponds are visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 360 metres WNW of All Saints Church, Wing and centred at SP 87693 22692, two rectilinear ditches are aligned SW-NE end-to-end. They are recorded on the 1880 dated 1st edition OS map though not on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing. The SW ditch is about 58 metres SW-NE and 12 metres SE-NE. Separated by about 5.5 metres the NW ditch is about 61 metres SW-NE and 13 metres SE-NW. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the fishponds remain extant (4-8).

Burcott House (dated 1674) stood in a meadow, about a quarter of a mile from the parish church. It was demolished early in the 19th c.Two rectangular fishponds with high embankments remain (B9 and B10).
Of the two "fishponds" published by the OS, 'A' is still waterfilled, measuring 78.0m by 12.0m, and 'B' is drained and filled in, its site marked by an amorphous marshy depression at the lowest point of a valley. Neither of these features can be recognised with certainty as fishponds. No local information or further documentary evidence to enable siting of Burcott House. Published survey (25") of fishpond A correct (B11).
No change to report of 17.7.73 (B12).
