A deserted settlement of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields south of the Wing to Cublington road, opposite Bramwells Farm and centred at SP 85969 22344, the earthworks extend across an area about 565 metres WSW-ENE and 180 metres NNW-SSE. The settlement comprises an interconnected system of linear trackways or hollow ways, creating a series of rectilinear enclosures. Within some of the enclosures to the W are blocks of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. Within other enclosures are linear slopes and terraces, hollows or possible ponds, linear banks and other more amorphous ditches that may represent settlement activity. To the E of the main settlement area, linear boundary banks extend about 235 metres that may appear to align with and link to field boundaries visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944, and so likely represent former field boundary banks. No evidence of these earthworks is recorded on historic OS maps. On aerial photographs taken in 2015 and recent remote sensing data, the settlement earthworks remain visible (7-9).
Deserted Medieval Village at Cottesloe (SP 860 222) (B10).
Deserted c 1450-1700. No historical evidence as to whether the name belonged to more that a Manor, Grange etc (B11).
A pattern of large ditched enclosures and other confused earthworks is apparent (B12).
A system of five or six fields delineated by depressions centred at SP 859 223 in a pasture field. No house steadings or streets are visible, and its is not possible to recognise the site as that of a deserted Md village. Similar depressions forming no intelligible pattern occur at SP 860 220. The whole area is patterned by rig and furrow.
Surveyed at 1:2500 (B13).
No change to report of 17.7.73 (B14).
AM Survey correct. A rapid examination of air photography (B16) shows the deserted village, the south side having been ploughed by 1977. Some of the enclosures on the north side seem to have ridge and furrow over them.(B15)
